The New Yorker Magazine App Reviews

Still no background downloading

The app still needs to be open, in the foreground and the display on, to download an issue. This is unacceptable. Its not an iOS limitation. Other apps can do this. Disappointing and embarrassing.

does not work

This app does not even load.

Why scrolling?

Your iPad-app has always been one of the best designed ones in the App Store, and while I have to admit that the new version brings some benefits like different size options for the text, I cannot believe why you changed the page-flipping for long articles to a scrolling-mode. I know scrolling seems to be the way to go in this digital age, but when you think about it, a fixed pages layout is the single most ergonomic way to show large portions of text on a screen: You fill a page with text, you read it, and then you need just one click to get a whole new page of text. With scrolling, theres just a constant movement that diverts your attention away from the content. Please, at least make the old flip pages an option.

Oct 2013 update - harrumph

I am using an iPad 1 with iOS 5.1.1, and the recent updates do not really work. Especially galling: the Cartoon Gallery (one of my favorite features) keeps either crashing the app, or reverting to the start page - just paging through is impossible. Pity.

Indispensable but bad

You don’t have a choice if you want to read this great magazine on iPad. But I have to say that I hate this new version of the New Yorker app. Text just does not fit the iPad screen well. Table of Contents looks uglier than before. Plus there is an important bug: often, you just cannot browse cartoons.

I enjoy the New Yorker and so I have also been very happy with the app, but now in this version the article jumps back to the top whenever the iPads orientation changes. This is very annoying.

New Version terrible !!!

I love the New Yorker but this version makes the app pretty much useless. When reading a long story or article its now impossible to stop or make a pause and then continue at the same spot. Every launch of the app brings the story back to the top. Also there are no more pages, just endless scrolling, which is terrible for reading. Also there is no single way to make bookmarks, to let me know where I stopped reading. Please fix it fast- And add these things as options ! It will be so great.

Authentication fails

What a nuisance. This version is terrible on iPad 3. I cant log in anymore with valid credentials which work fine online and on other devices. Support as usual is poor.

new library is useless

The new combined library is useless!! All editions are shown here: The ones I have already bought and the ones offered. All mixed up, the only difference is the button "5,99 €" or "view“ (or, on the iPad, no button). I want a library where I can easily access the editions I have bought. How about an option "show only bought items"?

New Yorker app

Very unimpressed with this app. After three months of trying to update without success, I tried unsuccessfully to remove it from my iPad. Still get constant update messages, still get stuck in update mode, cant open the app. Blah!

Not installed!

I downloaded the New Yorker. It says "installed" but its not! What happened?

Crashy. No sync.

For an app that basically just displays images of text it crashes very often. And those images means the downloads are huge. Wanted: text layouts (so I can resize text) and sync between the iPad and iPhone versions.

Crashes constantly.

I dont often take the time to review apps. Take the fact that I have taken the time to figure out how to tap out this missive as an indication of just how badly this app behaves (the title sums up the totality of the experience of using this app - constant crashes, no reading of content possible). That a major media powerhouse like CN would come out with this is simply mind boggling - and a major disservice to those writing and editing at this fine magazine.

Good Concept But Bad Planning

Why does this app not allow you use another app when downloading a new edition of the New Yorker? Most downloads are 150-200mb in size and unless you download the entire edition in one piece, you have to start again. It wont allow you to download editions in the background. Ive had to restart a download from scratch at least SIX times and I still havent downloaded the newest edition. I thought buying the digital version would make my life easier. It hasnt. I want my money back for unread magazines - they wont allow that either.

Crash

Crashed 3 times in 1 minute. Mightve been more but am writing this.

Wins on content, looses on format

Needs to be updated for iPhone 5 screen

crash !

Keep crashing and cannot update at all !

Crash, crash, crashy app

Award for most crashworthy app on the iPad I gave up my 20 year print subscription to save a few trees. Now I can barely access the magazine. Most frustrating.

Never crashed, works as advertised here

Been using it for months now on Retina display iPad and its never crashed on me. Is a small drag I cant download in background, but I can handle waiting 30 seconds. Do wish I could search text in articles though. Sometimes in a long article you might want to reference something - should be a benefit of being digital. In any event, I like not having 20 partially read magazines lying around the house.

Giving 5* to balance out the negatives

Have been using it since the launch of the iPhone app on my iPod touch. The app has been working without any problems. It has better functionality than some other magazine apps.
