The New Yorker Magazine App Reviews

Useless without having subscription

App is useless without having a subscription. The website offers stories and cartoons and is available free. Other reviews state that even purchasing customers are submitted to continual pop-ups. No thanks.

New Yorker broke promise

Problems logging on from iPhone. Customer service is slow in response and rather rude. Issue is not resolved.

String Content / Nearly Impossible to Navigate

Firstly, let me state that I am a huge supporter of the New Yorker. The content is rich, intriguing, and thoughtful. Unfortunately, this apps user interface is quite the opposite: clumsy, clunky, and frustrating. Its actually easier to visit the New Yorker website. Such a shame -- seems like a missed opportunity to engage the audience in a dynamic reading / interactive experience.

Needs Work

As a way of reading my subscription, its an improvement over print. However, it could use features like night reading mode and article position sync between devices. Its almost worth my time to just copy each issue over to Instapaper and read on there.

Awkward app

I am surprised that there are no reviews yet on this app for a well respected magazine. The magazine is fantastic as long time readers well know. But this app is not user friendly and thus inhibits using it. At least for this reviewer signing in is a hassle; and it doesnt seem to have a method for keeping the app open so that re-signing into app is necessary. And, if you forget your password, it is a pain to try to get the app to send you a new one or let you change the one you forgot. Hopefully one of the great people at The New Yorker will read this and see if they can get one of their IT staff to modernize and streamline the app. Otherwise, at least perhaps, one of the many fine cartoonists at the magazine will find an inspiration in this review to convey its sentiments.

Longtime fan of the magazine, app not working

Im a longtime fan and brand new subscriber! I wanted to fire up the app and link my new subscription but the app seems to be completely broken - not loading a single thing in the store or allowing me to access anything in the app for linking my subscription...ios 9.2, iphone 6

"From the Archives" cartoons gone from "Cartoon Gallery"

The iOS apps "From the Archives" cartoons are no longer visible in the iOS apps main "Cartoon Gallery" section; they only show up embedded in the articles.

Stopped crashing, still needs work

The app has stopped crashing but overall, this app needs an overhaul. It should still have a separate tab or someway to filer for "saved" issues. Scrolling all the way back for one is such a process. Or at least a way to bookmark articles and get to them more quickly!! Im also wondering why they have never bothered to consider integrating the web articles here somehow. So you switch from app to website if youre an avid reader a lot. Anyway, it could increase their paid subscription base if users who downloaded the app for the free web articles could easily sign up for a subscription. But youll need better people to work on this app.

But I subscribe...

Good at sending weekly notifications to my phone. Bad at remembering that my login is that of a long time subscriber. Wrote this review while app was still trying to update my library.

The worst! You have had a lot of time to get it together!!!

I have been a New Yorker subscriber for at least 20 years and the app has never worked properly. It is so frustrating. One has to sign in each time using the subscription number (if I had the hard copy in front of me I wouldnt need to use the app!!!). Really, unacceptable. I cant imagine how frustrating this would be if I were just a digital subscriber. Your readers deserve better.

Poor VoiceOver Support

I love the New Yorkers content, and was very excited to subscribe. Im legally blind and rely on VoiceOver to have the iPhone read text to me. Unfortunately, VoiceOver doesnt work well in this app, sometimes switching pages and/or getting stuck on ads. So I contacted support and was basically told the app doesnt support VoiceOver. What? I can understand a developer simply failing to make an app accessible. But from the tone of my exchange with support, it feels like the New Yorker is actively hostile to making its content accessible to blind and visually impaired readers. Not cool.

Hate this app

Every time the New Yorker updates their app the app gets worse. I’ve been reading the New Yorker for years and years and love the print magazine but absolutely hate this app for it. It simply does not work! About every 3 months I call their customer service and they say to just forget using the app and read it on my iMac! Can’t believe they haven’t figured it out after all this time. What a total frustration. Great content but absolutely frustratingly horrible app.

Current Version Loses Link to Activated Device Subscription

So frustrating I am about to give up on it and the magazine entirely. Locks me out of current issue, makes me sign in again, then claims it cant find the subscription. I go to website and confirm all is well, try again, start over again from scratch, and it just cant get itself to link back. No customer service because its after hours. Ive been a loyal subscriber for years but the app is singlehandedly about to drive me away with these ridiculous failures.

Loses Established Digital Account Access

The digital access subscriber database seems to be failing and the app forgets/does not recognize valid and confirmed digital access credentials across multiple devices. Please fix! Customer support unavailable and very frustrating.

Cumbersome

Very awkward to use. The user interface is not particularly intuitive and it can be frustrating to navigate around an issue. I think I get what they were trying to accomplish with their design, but it comes up short. I see no need to reinvent the wheel with this kind of app. Make the layout simple and familiar.

Please write a native app.

This app appears to be some sort of hybrid web app. It is slow, unresponsive, and the user interface is confusing. Please consider a native solution(Obj-C, Swift). If you are trying to go cross platform consider Xamarin/RoboVM(disclosure: I work there). I want to subscribe to your magazine, but the user experience of the app(my primary news interface)is so poor that I am confident I will not use it.

This app just gets worse

My New Yorker App Store subscription renewed week. For the last two weeks or more now, the app asks me to subscribe every time it runs (on an iPhone. )Today it wants $7.50 to download the latest issue. A month ago it gave good access to New Yorker content. Now it is a waste of time.

Good app, may be enhanced

I have a relatively positive experience with the app. It has successfully located my account, so Im accessing magazine content without any problems. Magazine itself is intuitive and not confusing. Navigating wishing the mag is easy. Just one suggestion though: there is some extra content, such as blog posts, which the magazine cannot include- probably because of space restrictions. The app can easily offer the blog posts. That way we can access a variety of topics of interest.

Useless for long-time subscribers & dysfunctional as hell

HATE THIS APP & Conde Nast! They dont know what Customer Service is, nor, judging by these reviews & others, do they care about retaining long-term subscribers. The app does not retain subscriber login data. Having paid $79/yr for print+digital access, it is absurd to be routinely told that they do not recog. my acct. Why the hell not? You certainly recog. my Amex charge! I have to log in repeatedly to get access & again when the app crashes mid-article. This is a long standing prob. thats gotten 0 attention from NYer, despite many angry subscribers. Its clear they cant provide the level of service NYer readers are entitled to expect. I will absolutely NOT renew for the 1st time in many years. RIP NYer and screw you, Conde Nast!

USELESS on iPhone... And Loses account info

App Loses your New Yorker account info, forcing you to sign in Again and again. Update: Conde Nast just changed app. Now it displays tiny digital copies of the magazines printed pages. Result is Clunky and difficult to navigate. Note to Conde Nast: A digital screen Has different graphic design requirements than paper! Resulting digital display is USELESS on a small iPhone screen. I am an avid reader but this design is bad enough that I will reluctantly cancel my subscription if its not fixed.
