The New Yorker Magazine App Reviews

200 add

Please update to support 12.9" iPad Pro

The iPad Pro has been out for nearly a year. How about an update so we dont have terrible, hard to read, fuzzy text?

A New Yorker Observation

Contrary to many of the dissatisfied reviewers, I myself am very pleased with the quaint format of the New Yorker app. Its simplicity offers a pleasant experience to the user whenever he/she opens the app. However, I will say that as a long-time subscriber of the New Yorker, browsing through previous issues can be a bit of a hassle, especially since you cant narrow down search results other than scrolling down with a weary thumb. For the most part, though, I recommend this app for fellow, or aspiring, subscribers.

Flash ads degrade content, awful on slow connections

A multi-decade print subscriber, I like the content. But reading the latest daily content as it comes out makes me grit my teeth. Flash ads re-arrange the entire screen each time I scroll, my reading point moves to a new place on the screen. On my usual slow rural internet connection, scrolling locks up seconds at a time. Screen redraws happen constantly and are annoyingly slow. The section with mid-week updates seems to have 10 times the advertising placement and the animation of ads is maddening within the app. 5 stars for written content, one star for ad platform.

No Audio playback control

No update in 2 years! The authors reading of the fiction piece is great, but the playback through only a play/pause button--no ability to scrub--is very frustrating when the app stops playing when the screen turns off rotates. Give podcast style controls at a minimum.

Updated: Still Bad

This app is awful. Terrible navigation. Signs you out almost every time. And now my accounts seemingly been erased and it wont come back or link.

Horrible system

i didnt want to write a review but after not being able to download the app and not receiving a reply by email, i have to say this is one of the worst subscription service i have had. if i dont receive a New Yorker Magazine through the mail i will definitely write a worse review on every possible site that i can. Do not subscribe to the New Yorker!

Love the magazine, hate the app

Im finding it totally useless. It constantly loses my data and I have to re-enter it. Now when I do that, I constantly (over a period of days) get a message saying unable to connect, try later. When I go to Customer Care, it tells me "incorrect state and ZIP" even though the fields dont include state and the ZIP is what appears on my address label. And when I attempt to sign in using the label information, it says it cant find me. Utterly frustratingly dysfunctional!!!!

Could be better

Pros: Very readable format Keeps your place in an article when you leave the app Cons: No bookmarks Cannot change background color

No help from customer service

As others have mentioned, this apps bizarre glitch is that it wont let you log into your account. Its infuriating. I attempted to contact customer service through the website, but its been over a week, and I have received no reply. However, I found that a good trick is to say no when it asks if you want to restore purchases.

Needs to rotate

Not acceptable for use on the iPad, since it wont rotate. Fine for iPhone though.

Almost Worthless

Search doesnt work. Doesnt keep you logged in so you get blocked from reading articles constantly. Very disorganized presentation.

Great but with bugs

This is a beautiful and thoughtful app, but movie reviews dont scroll and havent for some time. The sign in process and account validation can be maddening. And if theres a search function I havent been able to find it. Still, much better than other magazine apps Ive used.

Content is there but execution is buggy

For the love of god, fix the cartoon pages bug that closes them before I can read them. Please, remember where I left off. Articles constantly reset to the beginning of the article. Plus its next to impossible to link web content access to subscription. Very frustrating.

Beautiful Magazine, Revolting Bugs

I downloaded all the issues and the app then claimed that they werent downloaded... This has happened over five times now.

great magazine, buggy ad ridden app

the magazine is a pleasure to read, this app ruins the experience. the ads seem to prevent a smooth scrolling experience. iphone 5, IOS 9.1

Needs to be completely rethought.

Impossible to link my subscription. App is buggy and design both confusing and inelegant. The opposite of the print mag.

Slimy profiteering

I was about to buy the online Christmas issue. Then I got a pop-up notice saying that my "one-time," "one-issue" purchase would automatically renew itself, forever, unless I turned off "automatic renewal" in Settings before the month was over. Theyre scammers. No one remembers to do this, and thats how they figure theyll make money. Sorry to see a formerly good brand brought down by charlatan marketing. No thank you.

Pop-up ads make reading frustrating or impossible

I have a paid subscription, and yet using the New Yorkers iPad app for online material is a miserable reading experience. The pop-ups never stop as you scroll through an article. The text will blink on and off as a new ad loads. You can be more than halfway through an article, but will suddenly find yourself at the beginning of the article. Please fix this.

How can it be this bad?

Anything beyond turning pages seems to be more than this app can handle.

Magazine part works nicely but online content piece is terrible

Page constantly refreshes when reading online content. It constantly brings you back to the beginning of the article, randomly. Very frustrating.
